I've been having some weird noises coming out of my transmission for a few months now, I have finally traced the problem to what looks like the Imput Shaft Bearing. There is a whirling noise when the clutch pedal is released and the car is in neutral. And there is a ticking noise when accelerating through first and second gear. Although the ticking noise is not always there depending on how I use the clutch.
My question is mainly is it more wise to rebuild the transmission (cost of rebuilding the ISB?)
Or replacing the entire transmission (cost of transmission from my findings is 700$-1000$ used + labor to install.)
I'm hoping that it will be cheaper to possibly just rebuild/replace the ISB because most of the used transmissions I've found have 100k+miles on them, and they could have the same problem as mine as far as I know.
Also is the ISB something that will go out immediately? The sound has not increased in the past month or two, best I can tell, and the car drives 100% normal with the exception of the ticking in first/second and the sound when the clutch is released in neutral.
Okay lets be honest, this sound has been going on for about 5 or 6 months and nothing has gone wrong. I've taken several multi state trips and it appears to be okay for now, is it a necessary costly immediate fix or do I have some time to save? The car has 180k on it so I have been expecting some repairs to come up soon though...
Thanks for any imput I really appreciate it!
