over the past few months my bike has starting to act up. today i had my bike out and here is what i have all noticed...
My RPM TACK, IS working but my SPEEDOMETER is not working,

my Cruise controll will not work,

My engine warning light is on,

my Engine will back fire of and off a few times,

When im at a traffic light and let of the gas sometimes my bike will shut off or even sometimes when im just drifting down a hill it will shut off on me

What could be some things to try to fix are Harley without taking it to the shop, we can't afford a big Repair Bill at this time,

any Ideas or good websites on harley trouble shooting will be a big help.

There are enough electronics on that bike to thwart most home mechanics. I don't think you really have an alternative to taking it to an H-D service department.

I can only answer the first two. If your speedometer and cruise control are not working, likely your speedometer sensor has failed. The book says to remove it and clean it and if that won't work, replace it. (It's not a huge ticket item; you could call the shop and ask, I'm sure they could quote it for you.)

As to the other items, perhaps the stator? Hopefully you'll get a true Harley mechanic that can shed more light.

Added: If it is the stator, your voltmeter would likely be showing only 10 volts or less.

A harley is the rolls royce of motorcycles. It's big, heavy and bulky. No acceleration, no cornering, a very old design that isn't very useful or handy and doesn't perform in the modern world. It's a status symbol for people who are impressed with useless status symbols but it's just not a very good piece of equipment.

So what kind of status are you getting from your status symbol if you don't even have the status to properly maintain it? Is there any status in having a broken down rolls royce parked in front of your rental house?

If you actually like riding motorcycles, you can probably get enough out of that HD to buy a real motorcycle that has performance and doesn't need alot of expensive maintenance. Trade your expensive, useless, broken down status symbol for a nice honda is my advice.
