I have a 2002 explorer xls v6 with 4x4. We just bought this truck a week ago, paid cash and is no warranty. We had it checked out by our mechanic before we paid for it and it checked out fine. Now that we have driven on the freeway however we have discovered a high pitch whine coming from the rear end, we had it diagnosed as a bad pinion bearing and the cost for that will be 1200!!!!!! We were also told that even fixed, the noise would not go away, does anybody know about this? Should I just keep driving it if it is not going to help the noise to fix it? The diagnostic guy never looked at anything, just drove it and my boyfriend changed rear diff fluid and added a friction modifier but it did not help the noise and there were a few metal shavings in the old oil....I can't afford to fix it, what should I do?!?!?!
I forgot to add that the noise happens when accerlerating, it stops if I let my foot off the gas
