2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel Loss Of Power?

Hello I have a 2002 dodge ram cummins diesel 105,000 miles with a acceleration problem. It will start normal and sometimes there will be a sudden power loss while I am driving and I cannot pick up speed even If I press the gas pedal all the way down. The RPM's will go up but there isn't any speed increase. It will take a few minutes while for the problem to go away. A mechanic I know tells me it could be the lift pump. Any other opinions? thanks for anybody that tries to help me out.
 
it might be a problem with your transmission. if your transmission is slipping you wont be going anywhere.
