I have a 2002 dodge neon SE. A couple days ago, the check engine light came on as I was sitting at a red light but went off soon after. Next I began to notice that whenever the needle passed the 5 and 40 speed it shifted really hard but still drove. Yesterday, when on the highway, the car would reach 60 and 70 but it didn't really feel as if it was going that fast. Listening to others suggestions, I began using a better quality of gas, bought some gas cleaner additive and got an oil change. Today, as I was leaving the mall, I turned the car on, put the car into reverse(it stalled a little), backed out of the parking spot, put the car into drive BUT IT WOULD NOT MOVE, it felt like when you stop at a red light only when you push the gas the car still wont move. I can hear this weird noise that sounds like the computerized version of the noise old cop cars would make(i'm bad with descriptions).I turned the car off and restarted it, when I put the car into drive again it moved a little jerked a lot but then would not move again. Right now its just sitting. I have to have it towed to a transmission shop for repairs but I want to get some price quotes first(HELP!). Any ideas on what could be wrong? Repair costs? Im a broke college student so I really cant afford to just get a new car(car note).
I checked the transmission fluid level. It was only a quart low. Can someone please explain what an engine Idle feels like? idk?
Also the care does not shake or anything else of that nature.

Is the engine idling?

If the engine is idling and the car wont' move while it's in drive your right to take it to a tranny shop.

Did you check the fluid level? Maybe you have a leak and drained it and the transmission need fluid to engage the gears. If it's that and all you need is new fluid and maybe a pan and gasket it won't be too bad, but a new transaxle will be fairly costly.
