2002- 2 wheel drive honda recon atv problem.?

This is a push button shift style 250 and the gear selector lights up in 5th gear and then the number 1 light starts flashing a code of 3 flashes and then repeats every few seconds. and i cant shift down without stopping and shutting off the bike then it will shift when restarted, i know it is a sensor problem or connection to one of the sensors but does anyone know what the code means before i have to go threw each one and replace them. The repair manual is expensive and i cant do it right now , lol, Thanks/
