2001 Toyota Sequoia 4WD really engaging?

Last winter,I thought I wass driving in 4wd, but after I did an "unintentional" donut on fresh snow at 40mph, I was a bit skeptical. I took it in, and lo and behold, the 4wd was not engaging. It was "fixed" by my Toyota service dept. Winter comes again, I try to put it in 4wd, the orange center light blinks for awhile, then goes off, and four green lights stay on. all good right? But after last winter, I want to know for sure that the 4wd is actually engaged. I try to turn sharply to feel the "pull", but there is NOTHING! What are the odds I am in 4wd if that happens? is there a sure-fire test to tell if the SUV is really in 4wd? This would really ease my mind while driving in slippery snowy conditions on my unplowed, unsalted rural roads. Thanx for any help
