Over the internet estimate, with out opening the trans up... I would say its the forward piston is grooved or pitted.
But its a internal problem and yes, you are looking at getting it rebuilt.
I just rebuilt my Grand Prix, a 4T65E also. Great trans, especially when its been updated with better, stronger parts.
Whats cheaper or better for your pocket.... Rebuilding a trans or buying a new vehicle?
100K is average- GM, Ford or Dodge.
sad but true my friend.
Ok, I have to add- the EPC would set a code in the computer. The shifts would be hard, more of a slamming than erratic. Erratic shifting is [usually] caused by TCC components.
I do agree with the guy below, if you are going to go into it, do it complete and right the first time. Besides heavy duty trans, this is one of the more pricey GM trans. \
Good luck

Transmission has 97,000 miles on it. Seems the old GM addage is coming true...things break at 100k miles.

When I start the car on sub 60 degree mornings, and put the car in gear, it slips in 1st and 2nd gear. If I'm light on the gas, the car will move fine at about 2000 rpm until the gears fully engage. After driving the car down the freeway for a while, and it's fully warmed up, the problem goes away.

The fluid and filter were changed about 10,000 miles ago.

Is there an additive I can use? Or a repair I can do myself, like swapping out a clutch band or whatever is wrong? A full rebuild I imagine is around $2000

I'll recommend an additive but the most logical thing to do is to get it rebuild. The problem with the auto trans when they start to go out is that if you only do a "half way" job you'll end up tearing it down a few more times and end up rebuilding it completely. Do it once, do it right!
Also there is a service bulletin concerning the pressure control solenoid on that particular transmission that will cause erratic shifting.
Have it diagnose at a good transmission shop. Good luck
