My buddy has a 2001 Mazda 626. Last night his car wouldn't start without any previous warning signs.

He drives a good amount, and last night he drove his car to his hockey game and when he left it started fine. Then when I met up with him, he shut off his car and 10 minutes later, left and came bacl. (No problems.)

Then about 2.5-3 hours later he went to start the car and it wouldn't start. The headlights, interior lights, dashboard all worked, so we had a feeling it was his starter. (He had already had someone else try to jump it for the hell of it.)

Anyways, we left the car where it was and this morning we went back to it. I tried to jump it again and it didn't work so I grabbed a hammer and had him try to start it while I was hitting the starter and it started right up.

My question is, why would the starter do that without any previous warning? I've had a starter go in my Maxima and my Cadillac a long time a go and with both I had a good 2 months of knowing my starter was on the 'fritz' before it actually ceased working.

Maybe his starter just froze?
