2001 Jeep Cherokee engine knock/diesel sound?

Pretty much as the title states. My Jeep sometimes has a knocking sound almost like a diesel engine. What could cause this problem? Oil pump?

And does anyone know what a Tappet Plate Gasket is on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee?
 
Under the valve cover is the tappet plate where the valves ride and the sound like loss valves or lack of changing the oil and the oil has a hard time making it to the valves.Old wires and plugs could cause the problem.Good Luck.
