2001 Ford Focus Wagon Engine Trouble?

I was driving the other day and my car started to make a noise that resembled growling if i went over 30 mph, also when speeding up the car would also "kick back" a little bit, seeming to stall. The check engine light has now come on. What could be the problem and how would i fix it?
 
Go directly to Auto Zone, do not past go, do not collect $200. They will scan your car's computer for FREE! It could be something as simple as a troubled belt pulley. Check your oil level, though. Or, you might have a dirty EGR valve that needs cleaning out. Good luck!!
