2001 dodge ram 1500 stalls at random times?

My 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.2 auto stalls at random times and this morning didn't start. The engine cuts off quick, no lurching. The gauge cluster goes out at the same time. This morning my gauge cluster came on (always does at startup) but the truck would not start. Fuel pump comes on. Tried shifting the shifter to eliminate neutral safety switch. Also, when the truck did stall out previously it would come back on after 2-3 seconds. Stall occured loaded and unloaded, in wet and dry, hot and cold conditions for both weather and engine temp. Otherwise the truck drives fine. I have done a tuneup (plugs, wires cap and rotor) 75000 miles. Any ideas? No check engine light. I am going to borrow a code reader.

You need a new battery, people don't understand that computer vehicles run off the battery rather than the alternator at idle. The reason is most alternators drope to 12 volts at idle and the computer must have a constant 14.5 volts.

Kevin, here are the most common causes for that vehicle to stall.
#1 Idle air control motor. They fail all the time.
#2 something else.....
#3 Idle air control motor....
Are you starting to see a pattern yet?

It could be other things. And a code might help you narrow it down but we sure replace the IAC alot here in the shop.....

Tip. The intake manifold on that engine has a lower plate which can leak causing a vacuum leak which cannot be detected externally. Look down the throttle body with the throttle plate open and inspect the bottom of the intake. If you see normall carbon and soot you are fine. If you see sludge or anything that looks thick you have a leaking lower intake gasket.
Just a tip...
Best of luck!!!!!!!
