What would cause the van to run rough and then the check engine light came on. It starts fine and everything. It just runs rough in gear. If it is idling it runs fine.

Probably the plugs and plug wires. The reason the check engine comes on is because if the engine controller sees a slow down in the crank shaft cycle in one cycle (engine missing) it will turn on the light. This is because you are pumping unburned exhaust into the catalitc converter and this extra unburned oxygen will over heat the converter and melt the honey come inside it and it will no longer function.

you need to know what codes causing the light to come on. I just been there done this with the Mrs's 2000 Grand Caravan. Hope you have better luck than me, after a lot of testing and parts changing, we found the flywheel cracked. hers has the 3.0 V-6. Changed flywheel and runs like new.

on newer cars with so many sensors, its hard to really tell anything. but since you have a check engine light on, this makes it very easy for you to find what your problem is or some effects of the problem. take it to a auto parts store like auto zone and have them scan it. when the code comes up look it up. thats the best way without chasing your tail around and leading your self down paths that won't fix the problem. good luck.
