filter is on right &can hear the pump turn on

Check fuel pump (test) and directional flow as stated above. Then check for spark. might have a bad Crank sensor.

It's not going to be your fuel filter. I would check the fuel pump. It sounds like your not getting enough fuel to the rail. Check your fuel rail with a pressure guage. You can easily rent one from your local auto parts store. Look online for the actual pressure specs for your vehicle. If you have enough pressure you then your fuel pump is actually putting out enough fuel.
If that is the case I would check the ignition system. Spark plugs, wires, coils, ignition module, etc. Is the check engine light on? You should be able to get that checked as well for free at any good auto store. Start there. Good luck to you.

If you eventually get it started and it runs fine, then it's not the filter.
Check the battery.
Inspect all components pertaining to the ignition system for wear and if required replacement.
Check the air filter, possibly time for a bit of throttle body spray cleaner?
Ignition wires original? Time for a change.
Plugs old? Time for a change.

You fuel filter typically will last the life of the vehicle.

Did you put the filter in backwards? That would do that.

Either way, fuel is not getting to your engine. You should get a diagnostics done. It could be your fuel pump. Do you here a buzzing sound when you start your car?

well, give it a tune up, change the fuel filter and pour in some complete fuel system cleaner, if it happens aging i would suggest cleaning out the gas tank
