I have a 2001 Chevy Impala with the 3.4 engine. I started having trouble the end of last year with it overheating and it has been sitting for a few months until I could get the money to get it fixed. I recently was able to finally get the parts and hired a friend who is a shade tree mechanic fix it for me. Turns out the head gasket need to be replaced, was getting oil mixed with the coolant. The overheating continued, so we went on to the next step... changed the thermostat, overheating continued.... changed the water pump and yes the overheating continues. The fans do not seem to kick on until it one line above the "red zone" on the temp gauge, is that normal? I have already dumped so much money into this car I would hate to have to buy a new radiator, could that be the problem?
