2000 Yamaha Wolverine 350 4x4 Gear Problem?

I have a 2000 yamaha wolverine 350 4x4, that does not run right now. I was trying to fix it when I noticed that I can't get it togo into gear? I have tried rocking it and pushing it while changing gears, and still wont go into gear? Can this be a major problem? Or is the trans made to do it, when not running?
