I have a 2000 Mercury Sable, the engine light came on when I was driving through a pumpkin patch. It was very dusty as it was a dirt road. The engine idled rough until I got to the road and then all was fine. To this day, the engine seems to be performing fine, both just idling and driving. I read in the manual not to drive through dirt roads. Is this why the engine light turned on? How do I turn it off? Also, my brake(emergency brake) Light comes on intermittently while I drive. The emergency brake is not on. Why would this be one? Any answers are welcomed. I am attempting to save myself from a $90 diagnostic fee from Ford. Thanks

all you have to do is go get it scanned and see what it says but it probably clogged up one of your sensors...im probably looking at your mass air flow sensor got too much dust and dirt on it...id spray it off with some maf cleaner spray by crc...brake light came on because the fluid is leaking probably in the wheel cylinders as the fluid gets low in the master cylinder there is 2 spots the smaller of the 2 goes to the drums and the big one goes to the front brakes..the drums are low which is why the emergency lights are on...check the fluid and see if its low if it is you have a leak and like i said probably in the wheel cylinder...hope this helps

First the check engine light, it tells you there has been a malfunction in the emissions or computer control systems. there are over 400 different codes it set. It monitors these systems under different driving conditions. If the problems no longer exist the light will go off by itself after 3 successful tests. You may have damaged wiring under the car or clogged your air filter with your vehicular abuse.
The brake light comes on because your low on brake fluid. usually denotes worn front brake pads or a leak.Worn front pads indicated because you still have brakes. Reason- fluid displacement

There are a lot of things that can cause the Check Engine light to be on. If you take it to Autozone, they will check it for free.

The brake light coming on intermittently probably means that you are a little low on brake fluid. You can get a bottle of brake fluid at Autozone, Wal-Mart, etc for $3-4.

unplug your battery for a few mins and put it back on, that should clear your cars warning light, as far as your brake lights, play with your emergency brakes to see if there cool. don't go to ford to fix your car, go to your local mechanic
