2000 Mazda Protege Crank but No Start?

2000 Mazda Protege. I will start from the top. The cars check engine light went on for about 2 seconds before the car died while I was accelerating. It did not/has not restarted since. There was a fuel smell right when the car died. So far the fuel pump and spark plugs have been replaced. The check engine light did not produce any codes and the mechanics I had the car at said the cam and crank sensors were within the factory specs but just barely. When the engine cranks there is no smell from fuel so we tried starting fluid straight into the air box and nothing ignited. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
