The flashing air bag light and then remaining on indicates the SRS (Safety Restraint System) module has detected a fault within the system. When this happens, the SRS is then disabled and you do not have air bag protection in a crash until the problem is corrected.
You can retrieve the diagnostic trouble code with a scan tool. Or you can count the number of flashes you are getting from the light itself. For example, if it flashes twice and then pauses, and then flashes five more times that would be a code 25. They call this LFC or light flash codes.
Unfortunately this doesn't do you a lot of good unless you have the means to further pinpoint the test.
For example LFC code 25 tells you there is a a fault in the passenger switch deactivation switch. There are 7 steps to testing this circuit which will involve a volt/ohm meter and a wire diagram for the truck. Not to mention if there are connectors involved in the test, you will need a diagram that gives you connector location.
If you have access to these, then I say go for it. However if you probe the wrong wires and activate an airbag you are going to fill a pair of underwear very quickly.
