2000 Honda Shadow VT600?

I've got a 2000 Shadow VT600 and it is making this horrendous screeching noise (a mix of loose belt screech with metallic shavings mixed in) I've pinpointed the sound coming from transmission area. Does anyone have any experience with this noise?

Have you changed the oil recently?
Does the engine even have any oil in it?

Drain the oil into a clean drain pan and inspect for any metal shavings.
Might need a total engine rebuild.

I don't. Sorry.

My 85 Shadow 700 makes terrible tapping noises though. Bang, rattle, tap, tick, you name it. Noisy as all hell. But it runs strong, works fine, and has always done this with 38,000 miles on it.

I know this isn't any help for you, just saying that not all sounds you hear mean trouble. I can't hear your bike though so I can't say for sure.

broken shifter fork?
bad clutch,
center nut on clutch basket came loose
you're going to have to disassemble it, drain the oil, remove the side covers and make a visual check

(if the side cover bolts are Phillip Heads use the Japanese phillips head driver, "yes, Japanese and American Phillips heads are different", or if its metric allen heads, use "Snap-On" metric allen head wrenches, these bolts are super tight and soft metal and using the wrong tools will strip them out)
