...stalled out.? It felt and sounded like a hose burst when I turned the AC on... I could smell coolant (I think) and then all the dummy lights came on. I shut the air conditioner off and was able to drive it with out a problem but then when I turned it on a few days later it made a spraying/sputtering sound and the engine died again.
Any ideas on what could have happened or what the problem is?

Pop the hood and see if there are any blatantly ruptured hoses. Freon is very bad for the atmosphere and you should not let it leak everywhere. If an AC hose burst then you would be smelling freon, not coolant, but freon is almost odorless. If a coolant hose burst then your engine would over-heat very quickly and you would see a very large spill of green liquid behind you.

As for the engine stalling, if the AC compressor is trying to compress nothing or has broken, then it may be seizing up and stopping the engine. In this case your accessory belt should be in very bad condition, if it not shredded.
