2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. Ok here it goes. Every since I bought this truck I have been hearing a grinding noise. Can't really tell if it is coming from the front or rear. The grinding/howling is more pronounced only when my foot is on the gas peddle. When I let off the peddle it is quieter, right when I touch the peddle is comes full blown. Here are some repairs that I have done so far. I replaced the front brakes, rotors and inspected the calipers and caliper slides. I replaced the fluid in all three gear boxes. I replaced the rear axle bearing, seals, and inspected the gears in the rear differential. I checked to see if maybe the drums were not adjusted properly, but they are fine. I think that is all I accomplished so far, and they were all necessary repairs just so you don't think I'm throwing parts at it. I'm pleased with how well the truck drives now with the good axle bearings. This grinding noise just gets on my nerves though. The best way to accurately describe the sound is it almost sounds like the throttle body is sucking really deep for air when I touch the gas. My next best guess is the front wheel bearing, but the wheels had no play in them and felt pretty solid. Thanks in advanced for any advice on the subject and if I'm missing anything just let me know and I will add in.
I never tried 4 wheel drive. I will have to try that tomorrow to see if it changes anything. Yes, the tires are all the same size. One thing I forgot to mention is that it is automatic transmission if it is worth mentioning.
I just found the word to describe the noise. It's a scarping/grind noise. Like something is rubbing really hard.
I think I realized what the problem just by thinking about it. It might be the front brake guards. I will bend them out some tomorrow, but other suggestions are still very welcome.
