What kind of fish do you recommend for a 20 litre tank? The tank is currently cycling. It has a filter- the side kind. Thanks in advance. Its cold water. And.. I dont want tetras!

'you planning to house a tropical (fresh water) fish? try looking for Cichlids in your local pet shop. There are thousands of these species, common pets are freshwater angelfish and oscars. They grow fast and strong and are easy maintenance, too. If you want to pet aggresive ones try the Tiger Oscar fish, they're second to piranha (i guess..); drop some live shrimps or any small fish inside, instant NatGeo!

If it's cold water you're not going to have an awful lot of choice, one thing you could have are white cloud mountain minnows but since they used to be known as 'the poor man's tetra' I doubt if you will like them very much although they are a nice hardy trouble free little fish.

Your tank is only 5 US gallons. Too small for "coldwater" fish, especially goldfish (need 20 US gallons plus), white cloud mountain minnows (very active, 10 US gallons plus).

Stick a heater in the tank (they don't cost much) and you can have a single Betta. That's pretty much it if you're only starting out in fishkeeping.

If you're more experienced and can maintain excellent water quality, have a Betta for a few years, once he's gone you can try a shrimp tank. Shrimp must have very mature tanks, they don't do well in newly cycled (mine are thriving, but weren't added until the tank was 3 years old).

Since your tank is still cycling your going to need a hardy fish to ride it out.

White cloud mountain minnows are very hardy and are coldwater, I would keep 1 minnow for 2 weeks, then the nitrites should start appearing then you can add 2 more.

A betta or a paradise fish (not both) are also hardy and can live without a heater if the room the tank is in is not too cold. (make sure to close all windows and doors at at night, and evening if your not using a heater.)

A single zebra danio could be done, they become nippy if kept in pairs, but your tank is too small for anymore, they are once again very hardy fish and have a more than likely chance of survive the cycle.

After your cycle is done you can keep 1 dwarf puffer in a 20l tank, a couple of hardy live plants such as java fern, java moss, or anubias will help take out nitrates from your tank and they also look great.
