2 questions about stars?

1) What a massive main-sequence star turns into when its outer layer expands?
2) comparing stars at an equal distance is what? (2 words)
If someone could answer this it would be great. Thanks.

on #1. i think it will turn to a red giant and then will collapse into a white dwarf. that is part of the star's life cycle. and when the star's hydrogen had been used up. it will just burst.

i think that's all i know for now. i'm thinking of some other answers for #2.
