2 labs wandered up to my house, and we're not sure what to do....?

On August 1st two black labs wandered up to my house. They were in horrible condition; they were too skinny (ribs were showing unnaturally), we could SEE the fleas crawling and jumping through their fur, and they looked like they had been on their own for a while. We fed them four hot dogs (split them up between the dogs) and then got some dog food, treats, and flea and tick spray. The spray immediately started working, and they stopped itching as badly. We put olive oil in their food and their coats looked healthier within a few days. They stopped eating as much and stuck around. On August 8th, there was an ad in the paper saying something about 2 missing dogs....it matched the two labs' descriptions, and since the address was on the street behind and diagonal to us, it was very possible that this was the dogs' home. But we didn't take them back or call the owner b/c they were reported missing on Aug. 1, the day they showed up at our house. Since they were in such bad condition (and frightened of sudden movements; they'd flinch and shy away), we decided to keep them for as long as they stuck around. We kept feeding them and they stayed around (although they would run off behind our house to the pond to swim occasionally; but they'd always come back within a few hours soaking wet ;)).

Then they disappeared in the beginning/middle of September. We didn't know what had happened, but we knew they hadn't gotten hit because we drove around and we would've seen their bodies.

My mom was talking to her mom on the phone a few days ago and my grandma mentioned that her friend had a friend whose dogs had been gone for about a month and then they'd come back just when she'd gotten 2 more black lab puppies!!

So I'm not sure what to do now. About a month and a half has gone by since they've been gone and I'm still unsure.... I don't think they would've gone back to an abusive home so maybe someone saw them and came by our house when we were at school/work and picked them up?? But they probably would've come back by now, right? I'm not sure if I should give the address to animal control and get them to make sure the dogs' living conditions (especially since there are 4 labs there now...) are ok, or if i should just let the matter rest.

Please give your full opinion. Thank you!
(Oh and the dogs were not fixed....if that makes any difference.)
