2 Ford Fiesta Keys operating engine AND central locking?

I have just bought a second key from ebay for my MK3 Ford Fiesta, I got it cut today and went to try it in the ignition but the engine is not turning over. All the electrics come on, it is just the engine. Could this be down to the key not being cut properly? Also I tuned the new key in but now the original key does not work, can I not have 2 keys able to operate the ignition and the central locking?
