My 1999 Wrangler has been stalling at start up for about six months without a check engine light. When I start the car sometimes I have to give it gas to get it going, but even though it will start if I let off the gas the idle will drop to zero and it will stall. If I engage the gears and let the jeep roll with my foot off the gas the problem goes away and I can drive the car. This week a new issue popped up - my battery voltage meter jumped to 19 one day - I shut the car off and it went away. Has anyone had these issues, particularly the first two ? (please keep in mind that the voltage jump showed up 6 after the stalling issue and may not be related). Do you know what this could be? Oh - for the first three months I could get rid of the stalling issue by cleaning the engine with a pressure washer on the side where the throttle position sensor is mounted.
My thoughts on the issue are as follows - failing to start and idle could be a TPS issue or maybe a stuck air intake valve? Does anyone know how I can check these issues ? Can you feel a stuck air intake valuve if you pull it off?
I'm guessing the high voltage may indicate my alternator is going.
Any additional insight would really be appreciated. Garages have reccomened a million different things and I don't want to try changing a bunch of stuff just for the sake of it. Thank you.
