When I'm driving my automatic transmission wont shift out of first gear and my speedometer doesn't work for a little while. Then I try to shift it manually but it don't help. So I stop, Put it in park, Then put it in drive and everything starts working again like nothing was ever wrong. Can I get some suggestions before I spend money on a mechanic.
It's the 3.0, It only has 84,000 on it. I got it when it had 45,000 on it. I have serviced it three times since I got it.

You should mention how many miles are on it and what engine/transmission option your car has when asking questions for future reference.

Anyhow, obviously automatic, have you replaced the transmission filter? When the filter is clogged pressure cannot get through the transmission's internal parts to function correctly. That can lead to undesired/erratic shifting or no shifting at all depending on how bad it is clogged. Also, the transmission has a control solenoid. There is a possibility yours needs replacing. Inside the transmission are 3 shift solenoids that could possibly need replacing. You can replace them individually, but while the transmission is out replace all three. There are two automatic transmission options for the car you have so you will have to be specific when getting parts. Find out which model transmission you have.

Taurus are known for their tranny problems, sort of sounds like limp mode .Or it has a sensor malfunction. When was the last time you had it serviced and a new filter put in ?
