1999 chrysler cirrus smoking under the hood?

i have a 1999 chrysler cirrus. i was driving home today and it started making like a quite belt squeal than kinda like a boil over of coolant sound. once it stopped i could hear a kind of grind sound that went faster and faster as the car gained speed. than it all stopped so i drove rest of way home (20 min). about 1 mile from home it started smelling a burning smell aand the car was starting to try nd die on me. not oil or trans but like plastic and it started to try and die on me. smoke started coming out from under the hood as soon as i got into apartment garage. not a ton of smoke but enough to defiantly notice it. when i popped the hood the smoke was coming from the side of motor the altanator is on. check engine light never came on till after i realized windows were down so i put key back in to roll them up and it came on. i cant drive anywhere to get a code so was wondering if anyone had a similar problem or knew what was wrong.
