My boyfriend has a 1998 Mazda B2500 truck, it has a regular cab with a 4 cylinder engine. Recently, we have noticed a squeaking sound when you press the gas pedal. As soon as the gas pedal is released the squeaking stops.
My boyfriend thinks it has something to do with the driveshaft stabilizer. The truck was making an occasional clunking sound (once it happened when going around a corner) about a month ago so he took it to Monroe Muffler. The guy from Monroe said the driveshaft stabilizer was loose and bumping around so he called the Mazda dealer about ordering a replacement part. The Mazda dealer told him that the driveshaft stabilizer does not belong on that model truck. The guy from Monroe took it off and gave it to my boyfriend and told him what the Mazda dealer said. My boyfriend thinks the squeaking started after that. He doesn't want to ignore something that needs attention but wonders where he should take it and what it might cost to fix it.
If it is the universal joint, should it be replaced? What would it normally cost to replace? If you don't replace it, what would happen? Will it cause further damage to the truck if nothing is done?
