1998 jeep grand cherokee vs 97 Honda Accord?

1998 jeep grand cherokee or honda accord. My mom is pushing for the jeep. i don't mind either i just prefer the accord. (especially with the mpg) I drive over a mountain to get to work, and i live in ny so we have snowy winters, so moms thinking is get the jeep to get over the mountain. so i need advice from people that know cars.
I don't know how well an accord does in snow.
Should i get the jeep, is it necessary? what should i do?
 
Jeep for two reasons. One it is better in the snow and will last longer if its the 6 cylinder and two its American made. Everyone really needs to start pushing buying American made only things and especially cars new or used. Also the mpg wont be that much worse on the jeep and its so much safer.
