I just moved to California about 3 weeks ago and my check engine light came on. When I took it in for a diagnostic the mechanic told me that it was a P0420 Catalyst System performing under efficiency... which meant the catalytic converter was probably malfunctioning somehow.
I need to get a smog test/check in order to register the car (previously from Michigan) in California. My main concern is passing the smog test, so am I required to use an original catalytic converter from Honda? Since Honda charges around 700-1000 for a catalytic converter I was planning on installing a true-fit aftermarket brand for ~150 dollars. I was just wondering if this is legal in California and if my car will pass the smog test.
More details on my car. 1998 Honda Accord, 4 dr sedan, 4 cylinder 2.2L engine, 97,600 miles.
Also, I read online that Honda had an extended emissions warranty for the 95,96, and 97 Accords, is there anything for 1998 Accords since my car still has relatively few miles on it.
