1998 Buick Park Avenue N/A Overheating?

I was driving through NYC and the the exterior temp was indicating 110 degrees Fahrenheit with a/c on. The engine temperature gauge was within normal operating range. While stopped at a light, the tachometer started to erratically bounce above and below 1,000 rpm. When the light turned green I attempted to go, but the car barely moved and stalled... I attempted to restart it, but no luck. Even after six hours of waiting for a tow truck, (plenty of time to cool down) the car still refused to start. Once we got the car back home, I checked the fuses which still seem to be functional as well as all vital fluid levels and all seem to be okay. There were no leaks and there was no smoke or steam when all of this happened. After sitting for well over month, I again attempted to start the car and it actually started for a second or two then died. That was the most life I got out of the engine ever since the break down. I remember hearing the fuel pump working, but still refuses to start. What could possibly be the problem? How much would I be looking at? I'm also wondering if the car is even worth fixing or scrapping at this point.
