1998/1999 Yamaha R1 Clocks?

Well, my uncle has a Yamaha R1 from the years '98-'99.

On the clocks, the speedo reads correctly...as does the temprature and all the other data that the clocks display. However the rev counter does not operate correctly. When the ignition is switched on it self-diagnoses itself and keeps showin 0-4000rpm, then 4000-0rpm. We did a bit of research and discovered this was how it showed a fault. (It displays this rev range before the engines even switched on by the way). And it's tickover speed is correct, as it sounds like other R1's of the same model.

However we have tried a mutlitude of different things to get the rev counter to work. We replaced the Crank Sensor, the engine speed sensor and the Throttle Position Sensor on the carbs. We even tried a totally different bank of carbs!
And even now it still doesn't display the revs correctly

Any ideas on what gremlin could be causing this problem?

Thanks in advance

Forgot to mention we've tried another set of clocks and the same problem occured. We also tried an aftermarket rev counter and that didn't work either =(
