1997 Jeep cherokee bad smelling exhaust?

my jeep cherokee inline 6 4.0 4x4 exhaust has a real bad smelling exhaust its not a rotten egg smell i cant describe it but it makes my eyes water and it stinks The CEL light came on and i hooked it to a code scanner and it said the motor is running lean there is also a but of white smoke comming from the exhaust every once in a while if i go past 1/2 throttle Im also getting horrible gas mileage like less than 10 mpg can a mechanic help me out here i dont think its the cat because it doesnt glow after its warmed up
