1997 jeep backfire help?

my jeep cherokee sport died on the highway the other day. i was able to coast off and get into a parking lot at my work (shockingly) , a mile or 2 into the coasting the check gauges light went on the car did not die all the way. just it would do nothing when i gave it gas. in the parking lot I tried to start it and it will not go it just keeps dying but when you give it gas it sounds like it is backfiring in the airfilter and you can see the it too! anyone know what this is

it's got to be something with the timing. see if you can turn the distributer. if it moves you'll have to take it repair shop and have it timed. if you wait too long, it will wreck your motor.
