1997 honda civic d4 trans light?

hi i have 1997 honda civic and we drove it about 3 miles and the d4 light started to blink when i open the hood i smelled something burn so i opened the trans cap and saw very low fluid it took 2 qt's in but still was low now you have to put it in to d2 for pick up then into d4 to run, anyone know what happened, thanks
 
There is most likely a problem with the transmission--the light will only blink when there is a problem, and you should be able to shift into d4 without shifting into 2 first--I also used to drive a 1997 Honda Civic--I would have it looked at by a mechanic. Good luck!!
