hi,

My Automatic Ford Fiesta 1997 sometimes stalls when i select the Drive gear. It mainly happens when its cold. It always starts no problem, then i select Drive and the car gives a lurch and stalls. Its been to Stormonts to have it look at and after a diagnostic test,no fault codes were noticed and the mechanic basically scratched his head and told us it could be one of a hundred things!

Any ideas?
thanks

Hi Tracy! I would first try to clean the throttle body and throttle plate with some strong cleaner like carb cleaner or intake throttle body cleaner, and possibly remove the idle air control motor and clean the bore and also the pintle off. If this seems to help, but not enough, you may also want to consider a fuel injection system cleaning. I would try to find a shop that specifically carries the MotorVac maching. This cleans the fuel rail as well as the injectors, throttle body and air intake system along with the backs of the valves and tops of piston crowns. It's an incredible service that I do on many customer cars in addition to my own. When it's cold your vehicle needs much more fuel, and carbon deposits can soak up fuel and restrict air passages. If this was my car, that's where I would start. I would also look at sensor data before a cold start up and look to make sure that the intake air temperature and coolant temperature sensors match up. I would also take a good look at MAP herz. At sea level it should read about 150 herz, and in the mountains, as low as 135. I think that these are good places to start for this problem.
