1997 Ford F150 4x4 will not engage in 4wd ?? Why ?

My 1997 Ford F150 with 4wd manual selector on floor, will engage the front differential 100% of time when cold, but after the truck is operated for 30 minutes or more, it will not engage.....Do you think my vacuum hoses need to be replaced, or is this what happens when the vacuum pump on front differential begins to fail....A new vacuum pump actuator is around $90, a little more than I want to spend just to shotgun a part......Any idea how hard it is to put new vacuum lines, does it involve removing much ??
