1997 Ford Explorer transmission is only driveable in four wheel drive?

After rebuilding the transmission not even 5,000 miles later one day while driving the transmission makes a *POP!* then starts making an awful buzzing/grinding noise, and while this is happening the RPMs are steadily increasing. So naturally i put it in Park and turn it off. Then turn it back on and its fine and drive home. After this periodically it will do the same thing *Buzzing/grinding noise* and the car wont move. It seems to only want to drive in 4WD High/Low and i'm not sure what the problem is. If anyone could give me an idea of what they think is wrong i'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
