I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, and my vehicle is unable to keep running.

When I turn the key, the car will start, but then the RPM's will drop and the vehicle will turn off. When the RPM's hit 0, there is a popping noise.

I have checked the air intake, battery, and my belt and everything is securely in place.

The vehicle has been sitting for two days now in my garage, and the last time I drove it, it was running fine.

Any answers would be usefull.

Thanks in advance!

"If you have a plugged catalytic converter it will start and then quit as soon as pressure builds up. It may not start again until you let the pressure die down. Then it will do the same thing again."

I believe this may be what my car is doing, but im not sure. I know it is releasing some sort of pressure from the engine.

How could I go about fixing what you posted about?

Also, if it helps, I have a 3.1L V6 SFI engine.

Sure sounds like a clogged Catalytic converter I'd try picking up a good used cat converter from a auto wreckers for about 30 to 60 bucks and have a shop replace your old one with it , labour costing about 20 to 60 bucks if a fair shop.Keep in mind a new universal cat converter can be bought for as little as 25 bucks up to 150 bucks. If the Cat converter is clogged you'd barely have any exhaust coming out of it and if started cold and had over pipe's end the engine would stop bec you've just stopped the bit of exhaust that was coming out from coming through the tail pipe and forced it back into the engine.Note if it's that clogged the exhaust system should be displaying some kind of black exhaust from it and on it.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way a good exhaust mechanic should be able to tell if the cat converter is faulty asap and should be able to show you exactly why and how it's faulty on the spot.

could be a dirty fuel filter , bad gas , timing going or gone , could be could be , now we have to guess , take it to the garage
