I've just bought a 1996 ford ranger with the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder. I know that this engine is no power house, but i have a hard time keeping 110 Km/h on the highway. There is one thing that is concerning me. The Temperature gauge doesn't seem to ever read anything. Sometimes it floats just a tiny bit up. It is winter right now were i live with the temp around -10 daily. Someone told me the thermostat that regulates coolant flow may be stuck open resulting in the engine not running at the prime Temperature. Would that effect power? Also, right now i am getting about 21 mpg, i've read that i should be getting 26 mpg on the highway. does this make sense to anyone? Is there any simple things that i can do to get more power? If anyone could give me any ideas on what is wrong that would be awesome, thanks.
