1996 Ford Explorer dies while driving?

Has happened about four times. I will be driving and all of a sudden the engine totally cuts out without any hesitation whatsoever.. totally abrupt. Like someone turned the key off while driving. I do have a check engine light on, and I'm told the O2 and EGR sensors need to be replaced (by a guy who hooked it up to the diagnostic thingy), but I don't think they are related to this problem. Help please. This is a scary problem
