I have a 1996 Chevy Truck 6 cyl, Two Wheel Drive, Automatic, with 150000 miles

The truck will crank but it wont start up. I was told by a friend that it is probably the fuel pump because of the symptoms and because the fuel pumps are known for going out in chevys with over 150000 miles. I'm no car expert but the way to check this is to go under the vehicle and have someone switch it to ON while i listen for the noise of the fuel pump coming on correct? I did that and i didnt hear anything. Is it a load noise when it comes on?

Isn't their a way to hit the gas tank with a hammer and start it once?

and my other question is: If its the fuel pump, and I'm no car expect, should I replace it or should I just take it to a mechanic.

Thanks, any information is appreciated

it is most likely the pump, the fuel pump in my gmc truck has gone 3 times. you should first change the fuel filter (it is a $15 part and that might be the problem). if your truck is a pick up, you can change the pump yourself by lifting the bed off. the bed is held on by 8 bolts and the lights are just pluged into a plug. if the pump doesnt come on, another problem might be that there is a short in the 12volt power line running to the pump, this can be checked by turning the key to run and holding a voltmeter to the power line and groung.

Well you are not going to here a loud noise from the fuel pump. you might here a HUM from it if it is working. But if it is in fact the fuel pump you should take it to a good shop. The gas tank will have to be removed because the pump is in the tank. and it will need a new gasket when you put the new pump back in.

The first two times i had it replaced. The second time under warrenty. but it was still over heating and not starting or taking up to 20-30 min. to start. I started using fuel injector cleaner when every 3 - 4000 miles and then the problem was reduce. Over all the problem can up 4 times until i started using the cleaner. I am guessing i never really needed to replace the pump in the first place.

Okay to test the fuel pressure find the schraeder valve(looks like the valve you air a tire up with). It should be on an aluminum fuel line going into the back of the throttle body..press down on it with a screwdriver or something and if gas sprays out then your pump is still good, if no gas comes out then you are not getting fuel pressure.

You can listen for a humming noise but some fuel pumps will make noise even if they are worn out because it takes alot of pressure to run the engine.

Also most people find it easier to remove the bed from the frame instead of taking the fuel tank off because that is a b*tch.
