I have a 1996 Chevy Caviler, 2.2, automatic. I recently filled up the gas tank and went to stat my car and the engine died right after. After a few attempts restarting i gave up and brought to a shop where they told me the fuel pump went out. I towed the car home and it sat for a few days, I then syphoned about 6 gallons of gas out. after doing so i turned the key on to check the fuel level and i herd the fule pump run. the car started right up. Can a full fuel tank cause the fuel pump to not work? but when its less the full works fine?
thats the only explination i have to why it stoped working and then started up fin now.

Moving the gas around freed up the stuck impeller in the pump. It will get stuck again, such is the nature of a fuel pump going bad.

That is why they say to bang on the bottom of the tank when a fuel pump is suspected to be the problem. Doing so jostles the impeller and sometimes frees it up. But the repair is only temporary, and the pump will get suck again.

You need to replace the pump or your going to continue to get stranded.

the answer to your question is no, fuel amount in the tank does not make any diff. unless its empty. it could be the fuel pump still, they can come and go, but once they start doing this, they will leave you on the side of the road. It also could be a fuel pump relay, with out seeing and trouble shooting the car myself its hard to say whats going wrong. good luck.
