I accidentally closed out this question.. and I was still hoping for replies. Here it is again.
Here is a little background, suddenly we seem to have a coolant leak, and we know that we need a new muffler. The muffler/pipes/exhaust was the first problem. The other day the van started making a horrible grinding, bumping, clanking type noise when you tried to turn it over. If you wait a second and try again it starts fine. Now it seems to be blowing coolant out of the pipes. Where we live we don't have a good mechanic that deals with mid-engine vehicles close, and the one that have used in the past isn't that "great" My husband suspects it is a blown head gasket, and figures it would be cheaper to replace the whole engine. I am wondering if anyone out there has had something similar happen - or has any advice?

The is for the mechanic Tom M that gave me a good answer. No, we haven't overheated it. And yes, the coolant level in the radiator has gone down to almost empty once. No, coming out of the pipe I am not sure it is coolant, it apparently (according to a back yard mechanic that won't work on this) "smells" like coolant.
