We have a 1995 Mazda MX-5 Miata sitting in our garage that we've had for almost six years that we acquired from a previous owner. It's a five-speed manual transmission, and it gets around 25 miles per gallon. We noticed that the gear ratios are not only incredibly short, (60 miles an hour at 3000 in fifth) but close together as well. We thinking that a newer six-speed manual would be a great improvement to the car because not only would it reduce things like engine noise and wear, (from using lower RPMs) but it would also save us fuel.

My question is, is there a six-speed available for me to install into this car, how much of an impact this transmission would have on the fuel economy, how much would such a thing cost (parts only, no labor) and would the savings vs. cost offset be worth making the switch and purchase?
