Hey ya'll, I need a little help with a car I'm looking into purchasing. It's a '95 Honda Civic DX with a 1.6L 4cyl V-TEC engine, SOHC, with 216,000 miles. When I first looked under the hood, an oil funnel was tucked away to the side, so that gave me a little indication of oil consumption. When I checked the oil, it registered about a quart low. After a test drive and a chance to get it up to operating temperature, I saw no external oil leaks or smoke coming from the engine, i.e. being burnt off on the exhaust manifold. I didn't notice any blue smoke coming from the exhaust either, or at least not enough to be noticeable.
I'm going to get it into my Automotive Technology class at school next week, and we're going to give it a good run through. If it is leaking oil, this will just be identifying where it is coming from and replacing the gasket.
But my question is....
If it is, in fact, burning oil during the combustion process, what course of action should I take to stop it? I know replacing the valve stem seals is one thing to do, and maybe honing out the cylinder walls to make them flush is another, but past that I'm not really sure.
This vehicle is in VERY great shape and is the answer to my prayers right now, and is priced very reasonably. I'd hate to pass it up, and I know that a car is only as dependable as you are willing to get yours hands dirty for.
Any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! ~Eli
