1995 ford contour no oil change for 80k?

ok i bought a 1995 ford contour 4 cylinder with 198,000 miles the man said the engine will soon go so i didn't bother to change the oil since he said that now it has 286,000 miles on it i wonder why he said the engine will soon go that's why i bought it because i have an engine ready to go in it but since this one isn't going out yet why did he think the engine was going out 2 years ago
