1994 toyota camry over heating? needle goes up and down?

Just notice today that the dash needle went sky rocket to RED! Checked the radiator neck and it was spitting out steam and hot coolant. Got that replaced, but still the needle goes up at idle and runs a couple of mm down when driving? What should I check for first?
